The key to not having pain when working at home is to change your position frequently. There is actually a say that I love to use, “The best position is the next position”. The body loves variety and its the happiest when it doesn’t have to stay in one place for too long. Unless its sleeping, of course! So in the video below I am at my office and I look around and find 4 different options for working.
So the first option I find is just sitting at a table. This is where most of us start, by sitting at our desk or maybe our kitchen table. At the kitchen table, usually the height is not correct and the chair is lacking in some support but it is enough to get by for a little bit of time.
The second position would be standing. Standing while working solves so many problems for so many of my patients. Find something high in your home such as a kitchen counter or file cabinet that you can set your computer on and work. If you can’t find something high, put a box or milk crate on top of your table to make it higher and then stand. There are a lot of different contraptions you can buy to make your desk raise up. One product is called the Vari-Desk, its cheaper than buying a whole stand up desk.
Now if you have a high counter top then chances are you may have some high stools. A high stool is another great position. Its sort of in-between sitting and standing. I show you how to do it in the video at the bottom.
Another option is just picking any chair you can find. This could be a recliner or maybe some porch furniture, or a bean bag chair, it really doesn’t matter. What it key is that it is another option to position your body for a period of time.
Keep your body guessing and try out all the different chairs and standing options in your home, your body will thank you for it.
