Do you suffer from hand numbness in the middle of the night that is constantly waking you up? We are here to walk you through the best and worst sleep positions to stop this from happening.

Some people have their one “go to” position while others toss and turn all night. If you are one of those people that NEEDS to sleep on your stomach, try this! Line up some pillows, and lay half on your side and half on your stomach. This meets your needs of wanting to sleep on your stomach without hurting your neck or waking up sore/numb. Pregnancy pillows are also great for this position!

We also get a lot of complaints about the shoulder. People will sleep wrong on their shoulder and wake up sore or numb. Try to tilt off your shoulder when sleeping instead of sleeping directly on it. Supporting your neck properly is something you should be aware of too. You don’t want too little or too much pillow underneath your head.

If you sleep with your hand underneath your pillow, you may not have enough pillow to properly support your head, which is why your hand is trying to compensate by propping you up. Try a thicker pillow or an additional pillow to prevent your hand from having to do the work.

If you are one of those people who puts their arm overheard, try hugging a pillow at night. This keeps your arms in front of you and out of the impingement zone overhead.

Our principal with sleeping positions is this: no, you cannot consciously control what you do while sleeping. But, if you can fall asleep in a slightly more ergonomically correct position even for a couple of hours, that may be enough to prevent hand numbness or at least be in those tough positions for less time overall.
